文机　ふづくえ

江戸時代、庶民の暮らしのなかに広まった文机。
読み書きのための机とされていますが、
実際には、床に座った人の手元に
そっと寄り添う台だったのだと思います。

何かを書くためでも、
きちんとした作業をするためでもなく、
ただ、手を動かしたり、考えごとをしたり。

気が向いたときに使えて、
使わない日は、そこにある。

そんな距離感が、
いまの暮らしにも合う気がして、
この文机をつくりました。

和室でも洋室でも、
特別になりすぎないように、
素材や高さ、手触りを整えています。

Fuzukue

The fuzukue is a low desk that spread
among ordinary people during the Edo period.
It is often described as a desk for reading and writing, but in reality,
I believe it was a small surface that quietly stayed close
to the hands of someone seated on the floor.

Not necessarily for writing something,
nor for doing proper, focused work,
but simply for moving one’s hands, or letting thoughts wander.

Used when the mood strikes,
and on days it isn’t used, simply being there.

That kind of distance feels well suited to the way we live today,
and with that in mind, I made this fuzukue.

Whether in a Japanese-style room or a Western-style space,
so that it does not become overly special,
the materials, height, and feel have been carefully adjusted.
